Digital X-Rays

Without dental x-rays, we wouldn't be able to see decay and periodontal disease that develops deep inside your tooth and under your gums. Digital x-rays not only allow us to detect these problems long before they would be noticeable in a visual exam, but some estimates say they reduce your exposure to radiation by about 70 percent compared to conventional film x-rays.

And if you hate having x-rays taken because you have to hold an uncomfortable plastic clip between your teeth, you'll be happy to know we use comfortable digital sensors. The sensors are flat with rounded edges so they fit comfortably in your mouth and digitally capture the desired image.

Digital x-rays also produce highly detailed images that our dentists can share with you on your chairside monitor. You won't believe how empowering it is to be able to see a problem rather than just hearing your dentist talk about it! When you can see for yourself what's happening inside a tooth, you are better able to make informed, confident decisions about your treatment.

Since we store your x-rays on our secure in-house network, our dentists can easily refer to them for monitoring conditions, and the images can be sent to your insurance company or to specialists as necessary. Digital x-rays are also safer for the environment because there are no hazardous chemicals to dispose of.

3-D Cone Beam Imaging (CBCT)

Dental implants are the standard of care for missing teeth, but without the right technology, they can be time-consuming to place. However, 3-D cone beam scans at our Kansas City, MO dental office makes the process more efficient and reliable and improves long-term outcomes.

The 3-D images that cone beam technology (CBCT) produces allow us to see your teeth, your dental bone, soft tissue, nerve pathways, and the relationship between your upper and lower jaw. We commonly use CBCT for implant placement, but the information they provide also allow us to plan root canals and extractions for the best results.

Intraoral Cameras

One of the biggest mysteries in dentistry is what the dentist sees when they examine your mouth. How can you make informed decisions when you can't even see the problem?

At Westport Plaza Dental Associates, we solve the mystery by using intraoral cameras that let you see what we see during an exam. The small camera is about the size of a pen and illuminates the inside of your mouth as it sends real-time images to your chairside monitor. Now you can see for yourself how decay or gum disease is impacting your teeth and better understand why treatment is necessary.

We can print out the images and save them in your patient record for future reference and to send to specialists and insurance companies.

Nitrous Oxide

Dental anxiety is a serious problem that affects millions of people. For some patients, it’s so severe that they put their oral health at risk by avoiding dental visits altogether. But there’s no reason to suffer through another appointment! We are pleased to offer our patients the option of nitrous oxide sedation at our Kansas City, MO dental office.

Nitrous oxide is an odorless gas that we mix with oxygen, and you inhale the mixture through a small nasal mask. In moments, you will feel a wave of relaxation and happy, warm feelings. Nitrous oxide is very mild, and you won’t go to sleep. But you will feel calm and drowsy, and the activity around you will seem very far away.

Since nitrous leaves your system shortly after we stop administering it, you will feel refreshed and can drive yourself to and from your appointment. With no lingering after effects, you can go on with your usual daily activities, which is a real benefit for patients with a tight schedule!
