Tooth-Colored Fillings

We are all at risk for tooth decay throughout our lives, although we can minimize that risk with daily brushing and flossing and routine preventive dental exams and cleanings. But the fact is that at some point, you may have to deal with tooth decay.

Today the most widely used tooth-colored filling is a composite resin that closely resembles the characteristics of dental enamel. The dentists at our Kansas City, MO dental office customize tooth-colored fillings to blend with and complement your smile. You may hear these restorations referred to alternately as white fillings, composite fillings, composite resin, or dental composites.

What Are the Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings?

The first tooth-colored fillings were introduced in the mid-1960s, and over the years have continually improved in durability and aesthetics. At Westport Plaza Dental Associates, we repair and restore dental decay using tooth-colored composite fillings because they are durable and offer so many benefits:

  • We can use them on front and back teeth without compromising aesthetics.
  • The material bonds to the tooth so we can remove a minimal amount of structure
  • Bonding your fillings directly to the tooth restores about 90 percent of its original strength.
  • We can use them for cosmetic bonding to alter the shape, size, or color of a tooth to improve its appearance.

How Do You Place White Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Since the composite material is bonded directly to the tooth, we don’t always have to numb the area we're restoring. However, if decay progresses beneath the outer layer of enamel, we will use a local anesthetic for your comfort.

After our dentists remove the decay, they clean the tooth and apply a bonding agent that adheres to the filling material. They place the filling and shape it to mimic the shape of your tooth, then harden it with a curing light.

Your dentist will check your bite after placing the filling to make sure there are no high spots to interfere with the way your teeth come together. We will make further adjustments to the filling by polishing and smoothing it.
