Crowns & Bridges
It’s hard to project confidence when you are self-conscious about broken down or missing teeth. Beyond your appearance, damaged and missing teeth make it difficult to enjoy your favorite foods, and even speech can be affected.
At Westport Plaza Dental Associates, we offer the treatments you need to support a healthy smile, but if something goes wrong, we are here to provide the treatment you need. We offer high-quality customized restorations like crowns and bridges at our Kansas City dental office that look natural, feel comfortable, and function beautifully.
Why Do You Recommend Dental Crowns?
If a tooth gets a cavity, we restore it with a filling. However, if it is too compromised, our doctors will talk to you about using a dental crown to strengthen and protect the tooth.
Fixing dental damage with a crown allows us to restore as much of your healthy tooth structure as possible. Porcelain crowns are an excellent solution to repair a weakened tooth because they act as a protective helmet to strengthen a compromised tooth and prevent further damage.
Why Would I Need a Dental Crown?
There are several cases where our dentists might recommend a crown as the best solution for restoring your smile:
- A tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a filling
- A decayed tooth already has a large filling
- We need to protect and strengthen the tooth after a root canal
- You have a dental implant, and we need to restore its function
You can be confident that our dentists will take the time to explain what is going on with the tooth and why they recommend a crown to protect it. We use digital x-rays and intraoral cameras that allow us to share detailed images with you of the compromised tooth. Making confident decisions about your dental care is easy when you can see for yourself what the problem is and understand the consequences of not treating it.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Crown?
In most cases, it takes two visits to place a dental crown.
First Visit – Preparing for Your Crown
- Slightly alter the size of your tooth to accommodate the crown
- Take impressions of the prepared tooth
- Create a model of your teeth using the impressions
- Fabricate a temporary crown for you to wear
- Send the model to a custom dental lab that prepares your restoration
Second Visit – Placing Your Crown
- Carefully remove the temporary crown
- Thoroughly clean the tooth
- Check the restoration for proper fit
- Adjust the crown, so it doesn’t interfere with your bite
- Cement the restoration in place
With proper care and routine visits to our office for cleanings and dental exams, high-quality crowns at our Kansas City dental office can last 15 years or longer.
Fixed dental bridges are a restoration that replaces a missing tooth by filling the open space with an artificial tooth. The bridge consists of an artificial tooth (pontic) that we suspend between two dental crowns that are attached to adjacent teeth for support.
The process for designing your bridge is similar to that of a dental crown. We take impressions and prepare a model to send to our lab where skilled technicians fabricate your bridge. When your restoration is ready, we’ll make an appointment for you to return to our office to make necessary adjustments and cement the bridge in place.
